Award Categories & Scoring

Wines
Judges will award Sommelier Silver honors to wines that demonstrate above average character for the wine type and place of origin. Sommelier Gold honors will be awarded to wines that deliver additional complexity and character and rise above a straightforward recommendation. Sommelier Platinum awards will be reserved for the very best wines of the competition, wines that exhibit profound qualities as determined by the judges.

Sommelier Gold awards will be assigned a score ranging between 90 and 93 points, at the discretion of the judges.  All wines awarded Sommelier Platinum will be given a score ranging between 94 and 100 points. Awards and scores will be announced at www.SommelierChallenge.com and by regular mail.

Spirits
Judges will award spirits beverages of above average character a Sommelier Challenge Silver award. Spirits beverages of exceptional quality will be awarded Sommelier Challenge Gold, and spirits that receive a unanimous vote of gold will be given Sommelier Challenge Double Gold award.

Entering

A complete wine competition entry is comprised of six (6) 750ml bottles, or nine (9) 375ml bottles. Spirits entries require two (2) 750ml or two 700ml bottles or three (3) 500ml bottles.  For other sizes or types of containers, please contact the Director at SommelierChallenge@yahoo.com.

For wine entries, grape varieties, residual sugar, appellation, vineyard designation, proprietary names, vintage and retail price must be listed on the entry form with each entry.  The wine name, vintage and appellation will appear on the award certificate and published results, so should be given as it appears on the wine label.   Residual sugar must be stated as a percentage.

Please fill out the entry form completely, accurately and legibly.  Use of your own form (Word or Excel) is acceptable if it includes ALL the required information.  Horizontal/landscape orientation please.  Keep a copy of the completed form for your records.

Telephone number, email address and contact person are important.  Mailing address should be the address to which awards will be mailed.  Winners will be notified after the end of the Competition by email, telephone or regular U.S. mail.  Results will be posted on this website and others soon after the competition.

Spirits entries must list the name of the product, alcohol content, type of spirit and price.

IMPORTANT: Be sure to enter each wine or spirit in the proper category. If a category does not exist for a product you want to enter, leave the category field blank and the Director will assign the wine to the correct category or create a new category, if necessary, using the varietal composition and residual sugar level or other information given as a guide.   You may include tech sheets or other information that might help us determine the correct category.  Products entered in the wrong category will be moved to the correct category by the Director.

$85 per wine for entries paid by July 21, 2017
$95 per wine entry after July 21, 2017

$300 per spirits entry 


Make checks payable to Sommelier Challenge. Payment can also be made by Visa, Master Card and American Express.  Credit card charge will appear on your statement as "Wine Cellar Productions."

Wines and Spirits MUST BE RECEIVED no later than August 25, 2017. Do include one copy of your entry form in the shipment. NOTE:  Receiving Dept official hours are 11am to 4pm Monday through Friday.  Do not specify "priority" or morning delivery.  You are welcome to add the wine competition email to shipping tracking information. 

Foreign Wines

It is best to use your own importer or agent to clear your shipment through U.S. Customs.   If you do not have representation in the United States you may still enter using the competition's import agent, Accolade Brands. Accolade will need company name, product name, grape varieties, retail value and alcohol content on each entry for the forms it submits to the TTB for the approvals that are required. A fee of $75 will be charged for clearing up to three entries through U.S. Customs if the shipper uses a freight forwarder such as FedEx or DHL. The fee for entries that arrive via direct air freight is $150. The fee for more than three entries using a freight forwarder is $150; for more than three entries using direct air freight, $300. All import fees are due in advance along with the entry fees. Information about the wines to be cleared should be faxed to 800-521-5413 or emailed to SommelierChallenge@yahoo.com.  All foreign entries imported by the Competition should indicate Accolade Brands as the importer on the commercial invoice, using Robert Whitley as the contact person and 619-804-0371 as the contact phone number.  

The above fee is for import services only.   Sender is responsible for shipping costs and any duties, taxes, customs charges or other fees accessed by your carrier or third parties with whom you contract.

Do not ship until the necessary COLA waivers have been obtained from the TTB. 

IMPORTANT:  Shipper is responsible for complying with any and all regulations. Required labeling must be affixed to each bottle before shipping.   It is our understanding that a label must be affixed to the back of each bottle. The label must include the Goverment Warning, the phrase "Contains Sulfites" and "Trade Samles - Not for Resale".  The words "Government Warning" must be in capital letters and bold type.  The remainder of the statement may NOT be in bold type. The statement must appear as a continuous paragraph. The statement should read as follows and be in 2mm to 3mm in size.
